Notes for James Low
James was living at Marykirk, Kincardineshire during his early years. He became a wright (carpenter) and moved to Fettercairn, Kincardineshire at an unknown date. James married Margaret Low (or Law), but no record of this marriage could be found. It is known that they were married by 1796. I would guess that they were married about 1792. I feel confident that the list of children is complete, as the children, including deceased, were named in the death registration of James Low in 1855. The year 1855 is special for Scottish records. In that year, civil registration of births, marriages, and deaths became compulsory in Scotland. In that first year, a great deal of genealogical identifying information was required of all registrations. In later years, such detailed information was not recorded.
In 1789, when David was born, his father was only 20 and his mother possibly only 17. This was an unusually early age to be married in this part of Scotland at this time. Perhaps they waited a few years after the birth of David before they married.
The family was living at Fettercairn, Kincardineshire from before 1796 until at least 1803. They may have been at Logie Pert, Angus for a short time around 1807 (where daughter Margaret was baptized). James was living at Kirkhill, Dun, Angus from 1845 until 1855. During his last years, he was a widower living with his son John (ID=37).
James Low died at Kirkhill, Dun on 8 September 1855 at the age of 86 1/2, and was buried in the churchyard at Pert, Logie Pert. No gravestone could be located.
Notes for Margaret (Spouse 1)
Birth date and parents unconfirmed. Baptismal date given.
No conclusive information could be found on the life of Margaret. Early records which records the baptisms of her children spell her maiden name as LAW. Later records spell it LOW. There were several LAW families in Fettercairn before 1790, but only one birth of a Margaret Law was recorded around the time she would likely have been born: Margaret Law, daughter of James Law and Christian Robb was baptized 15 November 1772.
After checking various records, I concluded that Margaret was probably not a close cousin of her husband.
No record could be found of Margaret's death. She almost certainly died before 1851 as she is not listed in census. She probably died about 1845, at the time her husband moved to their son's home at Dun.
