Comments from Margaret Wright, email Graham & Margaret Wright <gandm.wright@btinternet.com> on 2010-10-29:
Clemie Lowe is identified from daughter Margaret’s marriage and death certificates.
“Magret” Hamilton, daughter, living at 10 Lylesland, Paisley, was the informant on Clementina Lowe’s death certificate. Clementina was single.
Clementina’s birth date ex Logie Pert OPR christening record (Ref 304/1). Birth and death records provide similar parents’ names.
From 1851 to 1881 censuses, Clementina was living with the same family, that of Frank & Jane Baird. Frank was a master brewer. Margaret was never with her.
At the time of the 1881 census the Baird family were living at 20 Bellhaven Terrace which was the address given on Clementina’s death certificate.
There seems to be no record of Margaret’s birth.
We believe that the daughter named as Margaret Henry / Kay is in fact Margaret Low, the illegitimate daughter of Clementina Low.
Margaret’s marriage certificate tells us that when she married Archibald Hamilton , she had an unmarried mother Clemie Low. Margaret Hamilton, daughter, was the informant on Clementina Low’s death certificate, which also gave Clemie’s place of birth and her parents names.
In the 1871 and 1881 censuses, Margaret’s place of birth is given as Glasgow, Lanarks. In 1891 and 1901 this changes to Barrhead, Renfrews.
We have found no record of Margaret’s birth anywhere in Glasgow or Renfrewshire with surname Low, Lowe, Henry, Kay or Kaye.
We have found Clementina in censuses from 1851 to 1881 (the last before her death) living with the family of Frank Baird, master brewer. No sign of daughter Margaret.
After she married, Margaret used the surnames of Kay, Hopkins and Lowe as middle names for her children.
The Margaret Kay that was living with James & Mary Kay in 1861 gave her birthplace as Glasgow, Lanarkshire. That same Margaret had the name Margaret Henry in the 1841 census.
The informant on James Kay’s death certificate was James HAMILTON, nephew.
Margaret Low Wyse remembers visiting “the aunts Kay” at Springfield Cottage when she was very young (recollection of Margaret Wright).
This is all circumstantial evidence but the argument appears to be strong
It is likely that the unnamed father of Margaret Low(e) could have had the surname Henry.
